Food Bank

On Thursday we went to the food bank, a deposit where early expiration date foods and foods that have damaged packaging are stored to be delivered later to people in need and churches. They prepared a presentation for us with videos and interactive excercises like debating on the subject of how hard or easy it is to not overconsume and an excercise of empathy where we had to imagine ourselves taking part in one of the multiple examples of families in need. After that we had a look around the deposit, realizing the importance of it, as if it wasn't for the food bank millions of tons of food would have been wasted.

The activity of the food bank involved students leaving the school grounds and visiting the only food bank in Athens. There we were first shown a presentation that was not only informative about the purpose of a food bank, its structure and how it operates but also made the students familiar with the concept of food waste and its effects. Additionally, throughout this presentation, the students got to play some games that put them in the shoes of those who are actively dependent on the food banks while also having a fruitful discussion about how easy it is for an everyday person to waste no food. After the end of the presentation the Romanians and Greeks were guided into the storage area and shown where all the food is being preserved and shipped from. I found this to be one of the most interesting activities of this program since it familiarized us with the previously not well known concept of foodbanks, and the students could work together during the games and not only create fun memories and strengthen their bonds but also and have lots of fun while also learning.
