Fashion Waste Awareness Day @ LTB Miguel de Cervantes
We're excited to share our experience organising a successful Fashion Waste Awareness Day at our school yesterday, April 16th

Collage Workshop
“For Awareness Day we organized several activities, one of them being a collage workshop. I believe this was a great success, as everybody had fun and we also ended up with a really interesting final product that promotes the idea of upcycling and giving a new life to clothes. We used different types of materials to create a collage from miniature clothing pieces and in the middle we chose to spell out a message regarding a sustainable mindset, “Eco not Ego”.”

Homemade treats

“For Awareness Day, we baked homemade treats for the students to enjoy. On the menu were banana bread and chocolate muffins, both made with a natural sweetener instead of sugar for a healthier twist. We also used dark chocolate in the muffins, known for its health benefits. The students absolutely loved the baked goods!”

Upcyclingworkshop
“We also held an upcycling workshop where we helped students from other classes decorate their clothes in a special way using different techniques such as painting, sewing, or even creating new items.
For example, one of the students made a wallet out of a jeans pocket. Everyone enjoyed the activity, and we had a lot of fun reusing clothes in this way.”

Presentations
“For Awareness Days, me and a colleague hosted a presentation at our school about ecological fabrics- how they're made, why they matter, and how we can make more sustainable choices in fashion. The presentation included a video that showed where recycled chlotes end up. At the end, the students joined a Kahoot quiz containing questions about the project, and the winner recieved a prize.”

VIDEO
In the video we watched during the activity, we saw the route of the clothes thrown away by the Westerners . The clothing items arrive in India, in different cities, such as Panipat, where they are recycled. Local workers transform the clothes into textile yarns, thus becoming a new material with a story behind.
During the video we also got to see the way the workers are treated and the poor work conditions they go through.

Sewing
“As part of the workshops, we also taught others basic sewing techniques to help extend the life of their clothes and create new things from old ones. It was great to see so much interest and enthusiasm around sustainable practices.”
